Child and Teen Counseling
Child and adolescent therapy is a specialized form of psychotherapy tailored to address the unique emotional, cognitive, and developmental needs of children and teenagers. Through therapy, children and teens can develop coping skills, emotional regulation strategies, problem-solving abilities, and improved self-esteem. Additionally, therapy can enhance communication within the family and foster healthier relationships. Overall, child and teen therapy seeks to promote psychological well-being, resilience, and healthy development during the formative years of childhood and adolescence.
When is counseling needed?
Many children and teens have problems that affect how they feel, act, or learn. Therapy is a type of treatment for these problems. It is a way to get help for your child.
When children have emotional or behavioral problems, the earlier they get treatment, the easier it is to help them. But as parents, you also want to avoid unnecessary treatment and costs in both time and money. When you’re concerned about a child’s mental health, you might be told by family members, friends and maybe even your pediatrician to relax and wait—she’ll grow out of it. Sometimes this is good advice. Sometimes it’s not.
There are times when it’s clearly not a good idea to wait to get your child help for mental health issues. For instance:
- Eating disorders
- Family history
- Cutting
What does child & teen counseling consist of?
Therapists working with children and teens employ various techniques and modalities depending on the age, presenting issues, and individual characteristics of the young person. These may include play therapy, art therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), family therapy, and more.
Child and teen therapy aims to provide a safe and supportive environment for young individuals to explore and express their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Sessions typically involve discussions, activities, and exercises tailored to the individual’s age and concerns. The therapist works collaboratively with the child or teen and their family to identify challenges and develop coping strategies, communication skills, and healthier behaviors. Therapists work collaboratively with the child or teen and their family to identify and address challenges such as anxiety, depression, trauma, behavioral problems, academic difficulties, family conflict, and social issues.
The benefits of children and teen counseling
Children, just like adults, can participate and benefit from counseling. Counseling helps children and adolescents learn how to identify causes of their distress, improve skills in asking for help and expressing emotions, and increase problem-solving abilities.
Our approach to child/adolescent counseling is holistic and strength-based. We understand each child/teen is unique. Therefore, we seek to identify and further develop individual strength and growth areas, while reducing distress and increasing coping skills.
